Three goals in the final 20 minutes gave Fairford & Lechlade Youth glory in the North Wilts Youth League Under 18 Cup Final against FC Chippenham.
Lawrence Merrington headed Fairford in front on 10 minutes before a fine run and finish from Caine Bradbury brought Chippenham level just before the break.
Both sides had good chances to score in the second half but it was Fairford who always looked more likely to score first.
Having been frustrated by some great saves by the Chippenham goalkeeper, Fairford edged in front on 70 minutes when Aidan Van Der Heiden scored an overhead kick.
With five minutes remaining, captain Shaun Skinner headed home from close range before Charlie Bailey wrapped up victory from the penalty spot with a minute remaining.
Coach Graham Merrington said “A terrific experience for the U18s, saw them line up against Chippenham at the County Ground on Saturday evening. Early pressure paid off for Fairford with a goal, Chippenham got back into the game before half-time with an excellent solo effort. A half-time roasting and a realisation that this was their last ever game together, spurred Fairford into action – but this didn’t bear fruit until the last 20 mins, when we took the lead through an over-head kick from an unexpected source. Two more goals in the time remaining saw Fairford get home. Charlie Baily was nominated by the NWYFL as ‘man of the match’.
This was wonderful way to finish a season of some pretty deep lows and fantastic highs. A terrific example of what can be achieved by a group of committed and driven young men with a clear aim. This is the first time the trophy has been won by a Fairford team at this age group and we are proud to bring the trophy back to Gloucestershire.”
